If you’re trying to build your IT career, you’ll probably already know about the importance of having some decent qualifications under your belt to support your career development.
Qualifications from the British Computer Society (BCS) are internationally recognised and highly sought after by employers, making them a great thing to have in your overall skillset. We’re now offering four versatile qualifications from BCS, also known as The Chartered Institute for IT:
But what do these qualifications actually cover, how long do they take and how much do they cost? We take a deep dive into everything you need to know about BCS qualifications.
As you might expect from the fact that they’re offered by the British Computing Society, BCS qualifications are mainly focused on developing skills and expertise that you might need for a career in IT. That’s not to say that these qualifications are only suited to you if you work in IT, though. The skills and expertise you’ll gain from these qualifications are easily transferable to many other careers.
Here’s what each of the BCS qualifications that we offer covers:
This qualification is perfect for any professional looking to develop, formalise their business analysis expertise or transition into this career. In this course, you'll gain a versatile set of skills that will allow you to strengthen your credibility in any company or digital transformation-related roles.
The BCS International Business Analysis Diploma is not purely theoretical, focusing on helping you develop your skills in workplace scenarios. With it, you'll learn how to approach business problems in a methodical way, translating business needs into actionable requirements that support successful delivery.
On top of it, you'll develop your skills to engage stakeholders effectively and support business transformation and change initiatives.
Far from being simply a project management framework restricted to software development, the Agile philosophy is widely used across many digital specialisms – from development through to marketing. Those with skills in it are widely sought after by a range of employers, so it’s a versatile qualification that can add a significant specialism to your skillset.
The BCS Foundation Certificate in Agile gives you a grounding in the Agile philosophy and helps you understand how the process works so that you can apply it to your own professional practice. The qualification explores common agile practices, how to respond to change and also focuses on how to develop the agile mindset.
More and more organisations are realising why it’s important to make sure that their digital services and platforms are completely accessible to their end users – a focus called User Experience (usually shortened to UX).
Digital professionals with experience in this field are becoming increasingly sought after by employers across a range of different industries. Basically, any business or organisation that relies on digital platforms to some degree will have – and need – professionals trained in user experience.
The BCS Foundation Certificate in User Experience is focused on giving you practical insight into essential UX concepts, techniques and tools. By the end of the qualification, you’ll know how to apply these UX principles to your own organisation in alignment with business goals.
In this Foundation Certificate, you’ll study how to perform user research and document your findings, as well as how to measure and evaluate usability. You'll also understand how to architect information, the concepts of interaction design, visual design and user interface prototyping.
The BCS Essentials Certificate in AI gives you an introduction to the world of AI and how to ethically implement it. The idea is that you'll build your confidence in using this tool without feeling overwhelmed by the technicalities of it.
You'll learn more about key concepts and terminology of artificial intelligence, the opportunities for companies and the challenges and risks involved in its use.
If you'd like to expand on the knowledge you gained from the Essentials Certificate, the BCS Foundation Certificate in Artificial Intelligence is a great way to do so. More than that, this qualification is perfect for anyone looking to build a strong understanding of AI or anyone looking to automate their daily workflow through the use of generative AI.
In the course, you'll get familiar with the principles of AI, the risks and opportunities in using it, as well as guidelines for using it in a responsible and ethical way. Moreover, you'll get a better understanding of how to approach AI implementation.
If you are new to AI or want to build on what you already know with a recognised foundation course, this qualification offers a straightforward introduction to both the theory and practical side of AI.
If you're planning on starting a career in information security (infosec) or cyber security, or formalise your hands on knowledge, you can benefit from a BCS Certificate in Information Security Principles.
This entry-level course will help you understand the basics of information security and with it you'll be able to spot and manage security risks, supporting safer ways of working. In addition, you'll learn more about the current legislation, regulations and where infosec professionals operate.
The BCS CISMP will help you progress into different roles within the cyber security universe, like Information Security Analyst or IT Security Administrator with an earning potential (based on experience and location) between £35,000 and £50,000 per year.
Most learning providers will give you a choice when it comes to how you pay and when. Whilst payment upfront is generally the default option, most providers (like us!) will offer some type of ‘pay-by-installments’ option. This can make the overall qualification a lot more affordable by spreading the cost out over a period.
Of course, the exact ways that you can pay for your BCS qualification will depend on the learning provider that you’ve chosen to study with, so make sure you do your research before deciding.
BCS qualifications can cost anywhere between £750 and £3000, depending on the course level. Essentials and Foundation Certificates tend to be on the lower end, while Diplomas are on the higher end of that scale.
We offer completely online-based BCS Foundation Certificate qualifications which are surprisingly quick to complete. Unlike classroom-based study, you set the pace of your own study, choosing your schedule and working through the course at your own speed. As a result, the qualification can take as long, or as short, a time to complete as you want to!
Here are the average completion times for each of the qualifications that we offer:
Since this qualification is a diploma, it means it has more learning hours to it. So, to complete the course, you'll have to dedicate 84 hours of your time. By including 2 hours of learning to your routine, you would be able to finish the course in around 6 weeks.
The Foundation Certificate in Agile will take about 18 hours to complete. If you study for about 2 hours a day, it will take you about a week to complete.
It will usually take around 18 hours to complete a BCS Foundation Certificate in User Experience. If you were to focus on 2 hours of study a day, it would take you about 9 days to complete.
For this certificate, you'll be studying for about 40 hours. If you were to study 10 hours a week (2 hours a day, five days a week), it would take you one month to complete.

All of these BCS qualifications are focused on developing your competence and the value that you can offer the organisation you currently work for, as well as those that you want to work for in the future.
At their core, they’re designed to build the essential skills that can help you stand out amongst other candidates when it comes to developing your career. They’re mainly aimed at people in the early to mid-stages of their careers – people who are looking to get initial experience or add important skills, abilities and knowledge to their existing skillset.
The BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis helps you get ready for jobs where understanding business needs and improving business operations matter. The most "traditional" career path is for you to become a Business Analyst (BA), but the skills you learn can be used in many other roles too, like:
Once you’ve finished the Agile qualification, you’ll find that you have a good understanding of the management framework that you can put to use in a surprising amount of career settings. Here are some of the main roles that a BCS Foundation Certificate in Agile can lead to:
With the BCS Foundation Certificate in User Experience under your belt, you’ll have an attractive skillset with some crucial experience that many employers will be jumping at.
The UX expertise that you develop on the BCS Foundation Certificate in User Experience can help you get a role like:
The BCS Essentials Certificate in AI and the Foundation Certificate in AI give you a great foundational understanding of artificial intelligence and its real-world applications and how to apply generative AI effectively to enhance everyday tasks and workflows.
Because of its versatility, these courses don't necessarily qualify you for a specific role. However, they will help you use AI to improve your workflows and apply it responsibly. They are especially helpful if you already work in engineering, science, finance, or IT services, or if you manage teams and want to create AI-based applications in your organisation.
Whatever type of digital career you’re embarking on or developing, there’s always a BCS qualification that would be a useful addition to your skillset.
