Please note that if you’ve been declared bankrupt or have a criminal record, AAT may not accept you as a member, which could prevent you from sitting your exams. It’s best to check with AAT directly for guidance on this.

Bookkeeping Course FAQs

The process of bookkeeping involves accurately recording and organising the day-to-day financial transactions of a business. This includes things like managing invoices, tracking income and expenses, handling ledgers, and reconciling bank statements.

In other words, bookkeeping is a vital part of any organisation, and a great way to start a career in finance!

Studying an AAT bookkeeping qualification gives you the practical, job-ready skills employers are looking for. Whether you're just starting out in your career or want to formalise your experience, AAT qualifications can open doors to entry-level finance roles and future study.

With flexible online learning, expert tutor support, and a qualification that fits around your life, we make it easier than ever to build your future in bookkeeping.

An AAT qualification is a professional finance and accounting qualification awarded by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) – one of the UK’s leading accounting bodies, recognised globally by employers and professional institutions.

AAT qualifications are designed to give you practical skills in accounting, bookkeeping, and finance. They’re ideal for anyone looking to start, switch, or progress in a finance career (no university degree required).

However, there are several AAT levels to choose from, depending on your experience and whether you'd like to study the bookkeeping or accountancy route. Here's a quick breakdown:

  • AAT Level 1 – designed to teach you the basics to bookkeeping
  • AAT Level 2 – perfect for beginners in finance
  • AAT Level 3 – for those with some experience or after AAT Level 2
  • AAT Level 4 – an advanced accountancy qualification for more senior roles or further progression

Studying an AAT qualification online with us means you can study with the freedom of flexibility and learn at your own pace.

Yes, ICS Learn is an AAT-approved training provider!

Our AAT courses meet the high standards set by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) for quality, support, and student success. This means that when you study with us, you can be confident that you're getting expert-led training that’s fully recognised by both employers and AAT.

The AAT Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping is designed for complete beginners, introducing you to the fundamentals of bookkeeping, including basic terminology and how financial transactions are recorded.

The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping develops practical, job-ready bookkeeping skills, including double-entry bookkeeping. This AAT qualification is often the minimum level employers look for in bookkeeping candidates.

The Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping is ideal if you have a firm grasp on all the topics covered on the Foundation Certificate, including double-entry bookkeeping.

Alternatively, you can study the AAT Level 2 & 3 Combined Course in Bookkeeping if you want to advance your career faster with a 2-in-1 AAT qualification.

Prefer a broader financial skillset or want access to a wider range of career opportunities? Consider one of our full accounting qualifications:
