PRINCE2® Student Stories: David Waters

David wanted to gain project management skills that would progress his career so he chose to study a PRINCE2 qualification with us.

After graduating with a degree in environmental science in 2017, I began working in transport policy. My career has spanned roles in central government, local councils, and the rail industry – always with a focus on making how we move people and goods greener, more efficient, and future-ready.

Much of my work has involved developing and implementing strategies and policies, but I’ve increasingly found myself drawn to the delivery side of projects. I want to be part of turning ideas into reality, and I knew that to do that, I’d need to build my project management skills.

I chose this course because PRINCE2 is widely recognised and highly applicable across the transport and infrastructure sectors.

It’s already proving invaluable in my current role and will be a key stepping stone as I work towards managing major projects in the years to come.

What stood out about ICS Learn was the flexibility. The self-paced format means I can fit study around work and other commitments, and I’ve really appreciated the bite-sized lessons – if I’ve got half an hour free, I can still make meaningful progress.

Even though I haven’t finished the course yet, I’ve already been able to put what I’ve learnt into practice. I’m currently working on a project with very tight timescales, and the course has helped me structure my time, communicate more effectively with stakeholders, and understand what’s required from me more clearly. It’s boosted my confidence and capability in a real, tangible way.

The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is that career progression and personal development don’t need to be out of reach.
